St. Joseph County Jail Roster
The official St. Joseph County jail roster is the JailTracker/Public Safety Cloud roster linked from the sheriff's inmate-search page. It is the first place to check for an adult booked into the St. Joseph County Jail after arrest by one of the county's eleven police departments. The jail is at 401 W. Sample St. in South Bend and is operated by the St. Joseph County Police Department / Sheriff. The jail lines most relevant to lookup problems are the main jail line at 574-245-6500, the Jail Division at 574-245-6501, and the Booking Desk at 574-245-6518.
The roster is not a full criminal-history database. It does not replace Indiana MyCase for court filings after charges are filed, and it does not replace the Indiana Department of Correction offender locator for sentenced state custody. If a person has been moved to South Bend Community Re-entry Center or another IDOC placement, the state locator is the right tool. If federal custody is involved, use the Federal Bureau of Prisons locator. If immigration custody is possible, use ICE ODLS. VINELink is useful for custody notices but should not be treated as the sole source for bond or court records.
Use St. Joseph County JailTracker
Start with the sheriff's official inmate-search page or the direct JailTracker roster endpoint. The direct app may require JavaScript and may show loading, captcha, or compatibility issues. The app strings show name-search controls, current-inmate filtering, released-since support, and profile-view actions, but the static research fetch did not render a live St. Joseph County inmate profile.
- Open the sheriff inmate-search page and follow the official JailTracker roster link.
- Enter the last name first. Add the first name if the result set is broad.
- Complete any captcha and use current-inmate or released-since filters if they appear.
- Open the matching profile and check booking, charges, bond, court, hold, warrant, and status fields.
- If no result appears, call the Booking Desk or Jail Division before assuming the person is not in custody.
Searches work best with the exact legal name used at booking. Nicknames, middle names, misspellings, hyphenated names, and recent transfers can all affect results.
St. Joseph County Roster Search Fields
The St. Joseph County JailTracker roster did not expose every live field during static inspection, so the safest table uses the app-supported controls found in the roster app strings. These are useful for search planning and for explaining why a search may fail or require a captcha.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last Name | Text | Unspecified | Primary name field exposed by roster app strings. |
| First Name | Text | Unspecified | Narrows common names and similar last-name matches. |
| Offender Name Search | Search model | Unspecified | Supported by JailTracker search actions. |
| Search Type | Control | Optional if shown | Search-type options exist, but labels were not rendered in text fetch. |
| Released Since | Filter | Optional if shown | The app supports a released-since value; local retention was not confirmed. |
| Current Inmates Only | Boolean filter | Optional if shown | App configuration supports current-only display or filtering. |
| CAPTCHA | Validation field | Conditional | Captcha validation may be required before search results load. |
St. Joseph County Inmate Profile Fields
A JailTracker profile may show more than one kind of record field. Booking data explains when the jail received the person. Charge data explains alleged offenses or filed matters connected to the booking. Bond data helps with release questions. Court and case fields can point toward MyCase, where court records after arrest are maintained. The public profile display can be configured, so missing fields do not always mean the jail lacks the underlying record.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Image / offender image | Booking-photo support exists in the platform, but public St. Joseph image display was not confirmed. |
| Name | First, middle, and last name as held in roster data. |
| Booking date | Original booking date and time, plus release time if configured and applicable. |
| Facility or jacket | Facility assignment, jacket number, or booking identifier when shown. |
| Charges | Charge description, status, crime type, crime level, arrest code, arrest date, and offense date fields. |
| Court fields | Court name, court type, court time, case number, or control number. |
| Bond fields | Bond type, bond amount, fine amount, counts, and status when enabled. |
| Holds and warrants | Warrant number, hold type, reason for hold, sentence, or agency hold data. |
Roster caveat: The platform supports booking images and charge fields, but exact public St. Joseph County profile fields should be verified in the live roster.
When JailTracker Does Not Load
Do not stop at one blank screen. The St. Joseph County roster is a Blazor/WebAssembly app, and static research saw an app shell rather than live records. A real user may also run into browser settings, loading errors, or captcha issues. The first fallback is phone contact with the jail. The Booking Desk is 574-245-6518, the Jail Division is 574-245-6501, and the main jail line is 574-245-6500. For records that are no longer live roster records, use the Records Division at 574-245-6535 or records@sjcpd.org.
In-person lookup or records help routes to the St. Joseph County Police Department / Sheriff at 401 W. Sample St. The sheriff site lists lobby hours Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Records Division hours in the county directory are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Incident, case, and crash reports are sent by email according to the Records Division page. Background checks have separate ID and fee rules.
The county JustFOIA public-records portal is the formal request route when a roster result is not enough. It is useful for older booking records, releasable arrest information, or a specific booking-photo request.
Use a records request when the needed item is historical, missing from the roster, or more specific than a current-custody status check.
County, State, Federal, ICE
St. Joseph County inmate records split by custody system. County jail custody usually means a recent arrest, a pretrial hold, a bond issue, a local sentence, or a local warrant. State custody means Indiana Department of Correction. Federal custody means the Federal Bureau of Prisons or, for pretrial federal matters, federal court and marshal-related records. Immigration detention means ICE. These systems do not always update at the same speed.
| Custody | Where to Look | Use It For |
|---|---|---|
| County jail | St. Joseph County JailTracker or jail phone lines | Current adult jail custody, booking, bond, local holds |
| State prison or reentry | Indiana DOC offender locator | Sentenced IDOC custody and South Bend Community Re-entry Center placement |
| Federal prison | BOP inmate locator | Federal inmates from 1982 to present |
| Immigration detention | ICE Online Detainee Locator | ICE custody if immigration detention applies |
| Custody notices | Indiana VINELink | Status checks and notifications, not complete court records |
VINELink and Sheriff App
Indiana VINE/VINELink is available for custody status and notification. It can be useful when a victim, witness, family member, or attorney needs notice that a custody status changed. VINELink should be paired with the jail roster, the jail phone lines, or the court record because each system answers a different question.
The St. Joseph County PD IN iOS app and St. Joseph County PD IN Android app also exist. Official store text says the app supports communication with citizens, crime tips, and social media posts, and that it is not for emergencies. A local news report described jail inmate lookup among app features, but the official store text is less specific. Treat any app-based inmate lookup claim as an app feature to verify in the live app before relying on it for custody decisions.
St. Joseph County Custody Facilities
Facility type determines the record path. The St. Joseph County Jail uses the county jail roster and jail phone lines. DuComb Center is a county community-corrections work-release facility and does not function as a standard public jail roster. South Bend Community Re-entry Center is IDOC custody. Juvenile detention is confidential and separate from adult inmate records.

Booking in St. Joseph County
The local booking path starts when a St. Joseph County law-enforcement agency makes an arrest or serves a warrant. The person is transported to the St. Joseph County Jail, where identity, property, intake, custody status, and initial booking data are created. The JailTracker platform supports charge, arrest code, warrant number, bond, court, hold, image, and status fields, though public display depends on local configuration. The official jail page says people are brought there to bond out or await charges and prosecution.
Booking is not the same as conviction. A roster charge may be an arrest allegation or an early charge entry. The prosecutor decides whether to file charges, and the court record in MyCase shows the court case after filing. The jail's video arraignment system connects jail custody with early court events because many local judges and magistrates use it.
Juvenile arrest processing is different. The county FAQ says an arrested child is brought to the Juvenile Rapid Evaluation Center, where intake considers the alleged offense, legal history, and aggravating or mitigating factors. Juvenile records are confidential and should not be searched as adult inmate records.
St. Joseph County Jail Visits
Adult jail visitation is governed by the sheriff's Internet visitation policy and the GTL/ViaPath St. Joseph visitation portal. Nonprofessional visits are monitored and recorded. Visits may be ended without refund for violations, and visitors may be removed from the approved list. The person who schedules the visit must be present, children must be with the parent or guardian who confirmed the visit, and a visitor may only visit the inmate listed on the scheduled visit.
| Visitation Item | Rule or Status | Source Note |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduling vendor | GTL/ViaPath portal for Saint Joseph, IN | Official visitation portal |
| Scheduling window | At least 48 hours ahead and no more than 72 hours out | Portal text captured during research |
| Approval | Staff must approve the visitor and inmate before scheduling | Portal text |
| Desktop visits | GTL VisBridge and an Internet Visit Tester may be required | Portal text |
| Mobile visits | GTL VisMobile is used for mobile visits | Portal text |
| Scheduling caveat | Portal displayed scheduling disabled during research | Verify current status before relying on online scheduling |
Dress-code rules include no low-cut, tight, see-through, holed, hooded, or sleeveless clothing; no hats, exposed undergarments, bare midriffs, yoga pants, leggings, spandex, coats, wraps, or short skirts or shorts. Threats, harassment, illegal activity, gang conduct, recording, nudity, sexual acts, drug display, and third-party communication can end a visit.
Bond and Commissary Records
The sheriff FAQ says bond or bail can be accepted at the County Jail between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. To find the bond amount, call 574-245-6501 or use JailTracker. Online bond payment is through GovPayNet and requires the inmate's OCA number and bond or bail amount. Confirm whether another hold, no-bond status, probation or parole hold, warrant, federal hold, ICE hold, or agency detainer blocks release before paying.
| Item | Local Detail | Caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Bond hours | 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the County Jail | Confirm with the jail before travel |
| Bond lookup | Call 574-245-6501 or use JailTracker | OCA number and amount are needed for online payment |
| Online bond | GovPayNet | Use only when eligible and details are confirmed |
| Money order | Mail to the jail with inmate name on the bottom of the envelope | This instruction is for commissary money orders |
| Lobby kiosk | Available 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. | Cash accepted only in kiosk for commissary |
Note: Confirm custody status, OCA number, holds, and bond amount with the jail before sending money or scheduling release steps.
